I can almost hear the quiet that has fallen over my home, London. Such shocking acts of vile, arrogant barbarism anger me beyond rage. The scenes of terror of my fellow Londoners on London Bridge and Borough saddens me beyond words. My thoughts, prayers and hearts are with the families of the victims of last night.
Our resilience in this city to terrorist attacks seems almost boundless, but they take their toll. We are strengthened by two things.
The first is the selflessness, bravery and professionalism of the emergency police, ambulance and fire services. Their duty and sacrifice to make sure our everyday lives continue cannot be stressed enough. I am humbled and grateful.
The second is London itself.
We all know what these cowards want: for a divided community to live with the fear and hatred that lives within them. Their twisted ideology is beneath contempt, and my words will never truly express my condemnation of them.
But I truly believe London is shining light for openess, prosperity and community. That's why we keep working together: we rebuild; we look out for eachother; we carry on. Nothing shows our resilience and their failure more.
The Labour national campaign has been suspended for the day. We will not conduct canvass sessions during today, but some low level campaigning such as leaflet deliveries will continue.
