Local Hero celebration

Last week, Shadow Minister for Women Gloria De Piero MP and the Rt. Hon. Ed Miliband invited a few members of the local community to Westminster to hear more about how they are changing Highams Park for the better. Labour Parliamentary Candidate Bilal Mahmood brought with him Hanna Chalmers from the Highams Park Plan, Louise McGing a local business owner and Gillian Poulter, a long-time local organiser.

The three guests were selected by Bilal after talking to local residents on social media about who they thought ought to be recognised. Each guest was selected based on the responses. Hanna has been hugely instrumental in the planning and development work involved in the Highams Park Plan. The Highams Park Planning Group is a group of over 450 local people which has been designated by Waltham Forest Council to create a Community Plan (“The Highams Park Plan”) for the Highams Park Neighbourhood Area. Louise has run a local business OMG Media and has been working on energising the small businesses around the Highams Park Station. Many people will know Gillian from her work on the Highams Park Plan and Christmas Fayre's over the years.

Bilal said "it was a pleasure to introduce Ed to people from the local area that have been changing the face of Highams Park. Politics can sometimes get lost in the corridors of Westminster. It was refreshing and helpful for senior members of the Labour Party to meet local community heroes, many of whom had a variety of views when it came to politics. The key point of the evening was to learn from what other people around the country are doing and celebrate their achievements, regardless of their politics.”
