Living Wage in Chingford and Woodford Green
Official figures from the House of Commons Library shows that nationally one in five jobs pays under the living wage – currently set at £9.15 in London and £7.85 across the rest of Britain. But in Chingford and Woodford Green, the seat held by Rt. Hon. Iain Duncan Smith MP, it's almost half the jobs available, ranking as fifth worst in the country.
Many of those who earn low wages will, under this Government, face additional sanctions through cuts to their vital in-work benefits such as housing benefit and tax credits. This news is particularly damning as the Rt. Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP is the architect of these sanctions and their local MP.
We therefore support Bilal Mahmood, The Labour Party's Parliamentary Candidate, who pledges to raise the minimum wage and support of the living wage. We further call upon Iain Duncan Smith to end his policy of sanctions on those who desperately need in-work benefits for a dignified family life. We realise the importance and potential of growth that lie in narrowing the gap of inequality. The living wage is one of the best ways to achieve that.
